On November 18, the State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases and Weigao Holdings jointly set up the Artificial Liver Technology Translation Center at the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University.
In 1980s, Academician Li Lanjuan headed her research team in creating a unique Artificial Liver Support System (ALSS) which turned out a major breakthrough in the treating severe hepatitis. Li introduced, “Unlike traditional approach, ALSS is able to temporarily replace the damaged liver in exercising relevant functions including removal of jaundice and liver toxins, and synthesis of coagulation and protein.”
Since then, the artificial liver center has gradually developed into the country’s top research center in the field with high-end technology. To benefit more patients, the artificial liver center has promoted its artificial liver treatment to more than 300 hospitals across 30 provinces domestically. Up to now, more than 20,000 cases of severe hepatitis have received artificial liver treatment in our country.
The new Artificial Liver Technology Translation Center will endeavor to combine basic research with clinical practice, transforming research achievements to improvement in diagnosis and treatment. Only when translation of highly promising medical research is accelerated can more patients benefit from the wide-use of laboratory technology in clinical practice.
