Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University 2011

1. Introduction

Tsinghua University offers 94 Master and 65 Doctoral programs to international students (see Appendix for the catalog of programs). Master programs are usually completed in 2-3 years, and Doctoral programs 4 years. Certificates will be awarded to those who have complete the entire course work and have passed their thesis/dissertation defense.

Ten of the Master programs and one Doctoral program are offered in English, and the others are offered in Chinese or bilingually in Chinese and English.

2. Qualification of Applicants

(1) Applicants for Master programs should have a Bachelor degree.

(2) Applicants for Doctoral programs should have a Master degree.

(3) Language skills requirements:

(a) For programs taught in Chinese: Applicants for programs of humanities, arts, management, journalism and law should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 6 or new HSK band 5score 180, and those for science and engineering programs should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 4 or new HSK band 4score 195.

For applicants who do not have adequate Chinese language skills but meet academic requirements of admission, intensive Chinese training courses are required in the first one or two semesters to help them pass HSK test.

(b)For Master Programs offered in English: See the requirements of the programs.

(c)For Doctoral Program applicants: If the English level is sufficient, the Chinese language requirement could be adjusted for some majors.

3. Documents for Application

(1) The completed Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University with 2-inch recent photo, signed by the applicant.

(2) Personal statement. Doctoral program applicants also need to submit brief introduction of research experience.

(3) The original or the notarial degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution (need to submit original or notarial degree certificate after being awarded), and academic transcript. The degree certificate and academic transcript must be officially sealed.

(4) Copy of HSK certificate and score report (unless a waiver is approved), and show original certificate.

(5) Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher (must show referee’s phone number and email address in the letter).

(6) Copy of the page with personal information in the passport (personal and ordinary passport).

(7) Original GRE or GMAT certificate if students applies to study in School of Economics and Management.

(8)The completed Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (if applicable, original).

The application fee is RMB 600 (non-refundable).

The certificates provided should be the original documents in Chinese or in English, otherwise notarial translations in Chinese or English are required. None of the above application documents will be returned.

4. Application Procedure

Step 1: Online Application

Complete On-line Application on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn). Print and sign the Application Form produced by the system after the application status changes to “verified”. For scholarship application documents, please refer section 5 below.

Step 2: Documents Submission

Submit the application documents listed above to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University, by post mail or in person. For applicants of Master programs offered in English, the hardcopies of application documents should be submitted to the relevant department/school.

5. Scholarship

The qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS). Applicants should apply to China Scholarship Council (CSC) (Website: http://www.csc.edu.cn) through the Chinese Embassies or Consulates, or relevant organizations in the home countries of the applicants between November and April (varied for different countries). Please find out the application deadline for your country in advance.

The applicants may also apply for Chinese Government Scholarship with the recommendations from Tsinghua University. But the number of the recommended applicants is very limited, and the applicants should be excellent among those who are not studying in China.To apply to this scholarship, please complete and submit the Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship along with other application documents.

In addition to Chinese Government Scholarship, the applicants may choose to apply for Beijing Government Scholarship (BGS) or Tsinghua University Scholarship, which supports full or partial tuition.For application of this scholarship, please complete and submit the Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship along with other application documents.

6. Application Schedule

Graduate Programs delivered in Chinese: November 1, 2010 - January 15, 2011.

Master programs in English: starting November 1st 2010, till the deadlines specified by the programs.

The online application shall be completed and the package be received by the deadline.

7. Review and Examination

The admission committee in the department/school will review the application documents and select applicants for further examination or interview. The applicants selected will be notified.

8. Inquiry and Admission Notice

The applicants will be admitted after they pass the examination or interview, and approved by International Student Admission Committee. Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202/JW201), and Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners will be issued in late June of 2011. Prior to this, the applicants may check admission status via the On-line Application System on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office. (For MBA and IMBA applicants, please inquire via school websites).

9. Visa Application and Admission Registration

The admitted students should bring their personal and ordinary passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202/ JW201), and original Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners as well as other original documents of physical examination to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China, and apply for student visa (X visa). Students shall come to Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University for registration during the dates indicated on the Admission Notice. Students must use personal and ordinary passport and X visa, and must apply for Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China.
