IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME(IB MYP PROGRAMME)
THE IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (For Existing Secondary Two to Four Students)
The Secondary two to four students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP is driven by a rigorous accreditation process that ensures the school maintains the highest international academic standards.
Students are trained to think critically about learning and they have to integrate the five Areas of Interaction (AOIs), namely, Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Environments, Health and Social Science and Human Ingenuity into the academic subjects. The Philosophy of the programme aims to promote international awareness so that students are groomed to be gracious citizens of the world.
Subject groups offered in Grade 8 (Secondary Two) include the following:
Language A - English
Language B - Chinese
Physical Education
Mathematics
Humanities - Geography and History
Science
Technology - Information Technology
Art - Visual Arts and Performing Arts
Subject groups offered in Grade 9 and 10 (Secondary Three and Four) include the following:
Language A - English
Language B - Chinese
Physical Education
Mathematics - Elementary Mathematics and Additional Mathematics
Humanities - Geography and History
Science - Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Technology - Information Technology and Design Technology
Art - Visual Arts and Performing Arts
At the end of the final year, students are to submit a personal project based on the subjects learned through the programme.
High School IB Programmes
SSIS offers two programmes at our High School
1) IB Diploma Programme
2) IB Certificate Programme
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
SSIS High School is a member of the International Baccalaureate World School and offers the widely recognized IB Diploma Programme.
To qualify for a diploma, students have to take a total of six subjects; three to be taken at higher level and three at standard level. Students must also fulfil three core requirements:
1. an extended essay based on research
2. an interdisciplinary course on Theory of Knowledge and
3. CAS-pursuit in creativity, action and community service
Subjects Offered
1. Language A1 – English, Chinese
2. Language A2/B/ab initio – English, Chinese
3. The Individual and Society – Economics, Business Management, History
4. Experimental Science – Physics, Chemistry and Biology
5. Mathematics
6. Arts and Electives-Visual Art, Music
Entry Requirements
New applicants must take an entrance test and sit through an interview to demonstrate sufficient ability in English and Maths.
Students from the Middle Years Programme must have obtained at least 4 points in the English Language and 20 points for 5 other subjects, namely Chinese, Maths, Science(either Physics/Chemistry/Biology), Humanities(either History/Geography) and Art.
IB Certificate Programme
Students in the SSIS School Certificate Programme
- study a minimum of 5 subjects where at least one subject is taken at higher level OR a minimum of 5 subjects all of which are studied at standard level
- participate in 100 hours of CAS and other enrichment activities.
At the end of the course, students who pursue the IB certificate programme are awarded the IB Certificate and the SSIS School Leaving Certificate.
