Dulwich College Shanghai:IB Diploma Programme
IB Diploma Programme: Years 12 and 13
The mission statement of the IBO resonates powerfully with our own College Values.
The IB Diploma Programme itself is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.
Students interested in applying for US universities can also sit SAT and PSAT examinations at the College.
Although the College seeks to provide all students in Years 12 and 13 with access to the IB Diploma Programme there are occasions when it may be more appropriate for students to take a Certificate programme instead. This option will still provide students with preparation for higher education but is less demanding and is not therefore accepted by as many universities as the Diploma itself.
Students in the IB Diploma Programme are required to study six subjects, one from each Group. Three of these subjects must be studied at the Higher Level and three at the Standard Level.

* Environmental Systems and Societies is an interdisciplinary course that satisfies the IBO requirements for a Group 3 and Group 4 option. This allows students greater flexibility in their subject choices.
In addition to the six subjects mentioned above all IB Diploma students are required to complete the following to achieve their Diploma:
The Extended Essay: A research-based essay (4000 words) on a subject of their choice
TOK: A course in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) that addresses issues of critical thinking
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) - a programme which takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies
The table below highlights the exact weightings for each subject within the course of a week. The Senior School is operating on a five-day cycle with eight periods per day. Each lesson is forty minutes in length.
